As part of its Kalima Translation Project, the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC) has published the Arabic edition of the book "Nature’s Explorers: Adventurers Who Recorded the Wonders of the Natural World", a publication from the Natural History Museum in London, translated into Arabic by Saad Sabbagh Al Samarrai and reviewed by Mohamed Fathy Khedr.
The book chronicles the expeditions and adventures of pioneering explorers, detailing discoveries they made, the specimens they collected, the letters and records they left behind about the marvels of the natural world, and the various artworks they created over the course of three centuries, leaving an invaluable scientific and cultural legacy for future generations.
Through its chapters, the book introduces a new generation of explorers, inspired by the great achievements of scientific, cultural, and artistic pioneers, such as Charles Darwin, Alfred Russel Wallace, Ferdinand Bauer, and John James Audubon. These figures embodied the spirit of the Enlightenment and the Scientific Revolution - events that marked a crucial turning point in history, paving the way to the discovery of the Americas and Australia, which expanded the known world beyond previous frontiers. Their findings reshaped scientific understanding of the natural world, as these vast continents revealed new, previously unknown plant and animal species, challenging established theories in what came to be known as the "Old World".
As readers journey throughout the chapters of the book, they experience the world through the eyes of early explorers, sharing in their hardships and struggles as they navigated dense tropical forests, towering mountain passes, frozen expanses, arid deserts, and the depths of the oceans. These adventurers risked their lives to explore the unknown, leaving behind a legacy of curiosity that continues to inspire new generations of explorers worldwide.
