A Session Discusses “The Middle East Amidst Global Changes and Regional Dynamics”

As part of the cultural programme of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, a special session was held to discuss and sign the book “In The Making: Navigating The Middle East Amidst Global Changes and Regional Dynamics”. The event was attended by HE Saqr Ghobash, President of the Federal National Council, and HE Dr. Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre, which is organising the 33rd edition of the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair.

In an effort to understand the evolution of political stages in the region and globally, the session, moderated by Dr. Hamad Al Kaabi, Chief News Centre Officer at Abu Dhabi Media Network and Editor-in-Chief of Al Ittihad Newspaper, featured insightful discussions with the book's author, HE Nabil Fahmy, former Foreign Minister of Egypt, and Hossam Ibrahim, Executive Director of the Future for Advanced Research and Studies in Abu Dhabi. The discussion delved into the core theme of the book, which scrutinises the ongoing conflict between the United States on one side, and Russia and China on the other, over the reshaping of the current international system following the end of the Cold War.

HE Nabil Fahmy commented: “Russia and China are pushing towards a multipolar international system, while Washington strives to maintain the existing system it dominates”, outlining the repercussions of this conflict on the Middle East in terms of interactions between the major powers in the region and their balances.

Fahmy also spoke about his career progression leading up to his tenure as the Foreign Minister of the Arab Republic of Egypt, followed by his transition to academia and the authoring of his new book, which is composed of five chapters. The first chapter discusses the conflict between major powers over reshaping the international system, the second examines the international competition over the Middle East, the third analyses shifts in regional interactions and the emergence of a “New Middle Eastern Order”, the fourth chapter addresses the Arab-Israeli conflict and its regional impacts, and the fifth proposes a vision for a more just and democratic international system, advocating for equal rights for all nations to foster the public good and suggesting steps towards a nuclear-free Middle East and world.

The session concluded with a book signing ceremony attended by individuals keen on international political affairs. The book is available at the pavilion of the “Future for Advanced Research and Studies”, which is showcasing 10 new releases at the Abu Dhabi Book Fair events.
